51% FDI in Indian Multi-Brand Retail Positive – Not the Magic Bullet – More Reforms Needed

The Dare Devil Step by the office of the Prime Minister of India to allow 51% FDI in Multi-Brand retail is definitely a positive, but not the panacea for the retail sector facing large hurdles like poor infrastructure, high real estate costs, inefficient supply chain, complex taxation and rigid labour laws. Except for Real Estate. most of them will be addressed with the inflow of foreign capital.

Key reforms for retail sector will be implementation of the Model Agricultural Products Marketing Committee (APMC) Act across all states and Goods and Services Tax (GST) which are facing stiff opposition from political parties.

51% FDI in Multi-Brand Retail Welcome in Cities with 1 Mn Plus Population

The Union Cabinet has approved the proposal to permit FDI in multi-brand retail with individual state governments having the freedom to accord final sanction. The Centre said state chief ministers of Delhi, Assam, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Haryana and Manipur as well as union territories of Daman & Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli have expressed support for the policy in writing.

Indian States Against FDI in Retail:
Bihar, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Tripura and Odisha (Orissa) have expressed reservations. (more…)

Indian Dunkin Donuts & More [Sandwiches, Coffee] – A Review

Jubilant Foods has introduced the World Famous Dunkin Donuts to Indians starting from New Delhi where it has 3 Stores – Connaught Place (flagship store – 80 seats), Greater Kailash-1 (80 seats), and Saket (60 seats). It now sells the famous doughnuts with sandwiches, coffee and breakfast menu in India, and has named them “Dunkin Donuts & More“. It will have 10 such stores, all 100% company-owned, by end FY13. This business will take a while to finalize as Jubilant experiments with various store formats.

Dunkin Donuts and More – The Menu
The extensive menu (24 varieties of doughnuts, 28 varieties of sandwiches, 24 different beverages) is a cross between what one gets at McDonald’s, coffee shops, Subway, etc. The menu has been tweaked around to cater to Indian tastes – hence, “& More” in the name, which is unique to India. Dabur – Builds Strong Brands – Scales to Interior India

Dabur continues its aggression in the consumer space with the relaunch of its Amla hair oil in a new youthful modern look and new positioning of Mazbooti bhi, Khubsoorti bhi, roping in Priyanka Chopra as the brand ambassador. Every segment of the consumer care division has recorded growth – hair care registered 10.4% YoY growth, oral care 8.1% YoY, health supplements 18% YoY, skin care 13.3% YoY, home care 14.4% YoY, digestives 9.8% YoY, and OTC & ethicals 12.7% YoY. Foods posted strong growth of 34.5% YoY (led by 37.6% YoY growth in juices).

Pantaloon / Future Group – Store Strategy Realigned + Backend Consolidation Done

Pantaloon / Future Group is undertaking a much needed course correction and the strategy makes sense. Execution though remains key, and given the challenging macro environment with discretionary consumption slowing. Management led by Biyani noted that ramp-up of stores is now taking longer – around 18-24 months in large malls, vs. <12 months earlier due to the fact that a lot of the malls are now destination-based malls.

Same Store Sales [SSS] growth for Big Bazaar (the key format) has registered low single digit growth Y/Y. Mgmt notes that this growth should be split into two parts – certain categories like communications / jewellery that the mgmt is deliberately de-focusing, which dragged down (more…)
